Senior HoopTime 2007

Each year, Yarragon Primary send off a number of teams to participate in the local HoopTime basketball competition. In term two, we sent four teams to play against other schools from around our district and all were quite successful. In particular, our All Stars Boys and Girls teams won their sections and will compete at Dandenong in the Regional Finals on the 25th October.

Well done to all participants!

Tarago Winter Round Robin

In the second-last week before the end of Term 2, our senior students participated in a Round Robin of Winter sports with schools around the district. The sports contested by Yarrragon Primary School were Football, Soccer, Tee Ball, and Netball, with the Football side including four students from Drouin West.

In ugly weather, our soccer team still had great fun and tried hard all day. The netballers put in a big effort as always and narrowly missed out on the opportunity to go on the the next stage of competition. The big surprise packets were Tee Ball and Footy. Being a lesser known sport, we have always struggled to be competitive in Tee Ball, but our team had an excellent day out and worked well as a team, led by a couple of our junior students, coming out victorious and will contest the Zone District competition in Term 3.

I had the opportunity to coach the Football side once again. Last year we were severely outplayed, eventually losing by around 200 points! I remember, however, being so proud of the way that our team played and how they kept on trying, even when the contest was basically over. This year I was equally impressed with the same great team spirit and effort. The difference was that our guys had grown and developed at a phenominal rate in the 12 months gone. The way that the team worked for each other and ran hard at every opportunity was inspiring and great to watch. With some great efforts also by our female team members, we eventually ran out victorious, 89 - 42. A great effort by all!!

ZONE AND REGIONAL COMPETITIONS:

Our footy team continued it's fantastic run over the next three weeks, playing some great footy in the Zone stage of qualifying to win all games against the four schools attending. The abiltiy of the team to work together and utilise all of it's players was the difference between us and the other teams. It was great to see a big step up from our tough ladies in Cassie, Molly and Hannah 'Spanna'. We saw Spanna take a couple of strong marks and run through the midfield well, Molly laid some big tackles and took some hard knocks too; unbelievable for such a little lady! Cassie showed great strength many times, backing into packs to spoil in the backline and taking on boys who were much bigger than herself. A great team effort all around!

Less than two weeks after our great day at Zone finals, we were told we had less time than we thought to get ready for the Regional Finals at Traralgon. In fact the day of the Regional Finals was scheduled for two days before the majority of the team was to play against Garfield in the local Under 12 Yarragon Football team. Whether this played a part, or whether we were just overrun by some quality opposition, we can't be sure. While were put up a good fight against our first two opponents, our second half of the day was more a matter of running through the motions and resting the boys who were playing Sunday as much as possible. Once again, our Drouin West boys showed lots of spirit and our tough ladies did very well yet again. Convenor on the day, Ray Burgess, commented that the undoubtable play of the day was when Cassie took on three boys in our defensive goal square and took a sreamer! She then went back and calmly chipped the ball off to a team mate to clear the ball away from a certain goal.

I would like to thank everybody who participated in the Winter Round Robin this year and pay particular tribute to the Tee Ball Team who did extremely well this year, making it to Zone Finals, and the Footy Team that made it all the way to the Regional Finals. I make special mention of the boys from Drouin West that teamed up with us this year. I would also like to thank the many parents and helpers who assisted in field umpiring, goal umpiring, scoring, and supporting throughout the whole campaign.

All The Best For Next Year!
Mr G
