Dear Parents,
Welcome to Grade 4/5, 2008, in Room 2. We have had a very positive and exciting start to the year, with all students settling in to the new routines and challenges extremely well.
This year Joel Gilcrist and I are working extensively together to meet all your child’s educational needs. I am teaching four sessions of English and one session of Art. Joel is teaching four sessions of Maths and one session of Information Technology each week. Both the Grade 4/5 and Grade 5/6 are combining for three sessions of Active Learning each week. Our specialists, Frau Russo teaching German, Mr Cottrell teaching Music and Mrs Morgan teaching P.A.S.E. are all timetabled on Thursdays. I have included a timetable for you, and your child has one stuck in their diary.
OUR CLASS VALUES
- Respect yourself.
- Respect others.
- Respect our things.
DIARIES
Your child’s diary is an important means of communication between home and school. Each child will be using their diaries at home and at school, so it is vital that they bring it to school each day. Your child is required to record all their home reading, special dates, maths and spelling homework in it. A parent’s signature it needed once a week. Diaries will be checked once a week, on Fridays, and each child will receive points for their House when they have filled it in correctly. The diary can also be used for non-urgent messages parents need to communicate to me, and I will often write comments about your child to you.
HOME LEARNING
As well as completing their diaries, students are required to read regularly at home. The importance of reading each night at home does not lesson as children get older. A good time to read may be in bed each night, just before they go to sleep. It is also important to still read to your child, as well as listen to them read once or twice a week. This shows that reading is valued by you, as well as helping your child’s fluency, expression and comprehension.
All students will have spelling words to learn each week, which are written in their diaries.
Our Yearbook monthly tasks are also to be completed, and are due in at the end of each month. This will require your child to be organised and complete one or two tasks each week, so they are not rushing to finish them. Maths homework
ACTIVE LEARNING
Our learning focus for this term is “Melbourne” and all students seem very keen to start on their projects this week. Active Learning projects are to be completed only at school, but information resources can include those from home.
