2008 School Captains Captain Elections - Girls Captain Elections - Boys

February 12, 2008

Dear Parents,

Well here we are again! Another exciting year, with some new developments and changes to last year. Due to the great success of the team-teaching of the senior grades last year, we have once again joined resources at the top end of the school, although this year it also includes the grade 4 students. It has been great to see how well the children have already adapted to this learning style, benefiting from the strengths of both teachers.

All children have a timetable in their diaries, which is also displayed in the classrooms, showing when students have all their subjects. Maths and Information Technology is taken by Mr Gilcrist, English and Art is taken by Mrs Jones, while Active Learning is taken by both teachers, with all children working together. In Term 1 our focus is Melbourne, with the Grade 5/6 students heading to Urban Camp in the first week of Term 2 (8 weeks away!). Students may do some additional research at home, although the idea of Active Learning is that it is mostly a School-Based research process.

All Grade 4/5/6 students will also be required to complete a Year Book, which will be a monthly collection of important dates, goals, and other activities that will need to be submitted at the end of each month for assessment. In contrast to their Active Learning, the Year Book is regarded predominantly as a Home Learning Task, with some small amounts of time given at school for this. While we encourage assistance from home, it is important that the work produced is their own work. Any confusion over tasks, procedures, and overall requirements needs to be sorted out with the child’s teacher.

In addition to the children’s Year Books, they will shortly be bringing home weekly maths homework sheets to be completed and put in their home learning display folders. At various times there will be additional homework, particularly in Grades 5 & 6 and an ongoing focus at home for all grades needs to be auto recall of number facts – particularly multiplication and division. Students will have routine timed quizzes to monitor their development in this area.

Remember to feel free to drop in if you need to clarify anything from your children’s classes, or write a note to me in your child's diary.

Regards,

Joel Gilcrist
